How to Choose a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School

There are other schools in the area that offer BJJ Programs, so you have to be sure to look for to find the school that is right for you.  Here are some things to consider.

Who teaches the BJJ Classes?

There are schools who have students teach classes. Although it is acceptable for Purple Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to hold instruction, you want to have a full time black belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor to learn from.  They have more experience, and after all, you are paying to learn, so why not learn the techniques the right way from the beginning.

Is the Instructor a qualified Black Belt ?

With the growing popularity of  BJJ not just as a sport, but as a preferred martial arts program for kids, there has been a lot of self-proclaimed BJJ Black Belt opening up schools everywhere.

When you check out a school,  You want to research your instructor.  Find out where has your instructor trained, and who they have trained under. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu started with Carlos and Helio Gracie, so your professor should have learned directly from the family, or from students of the Gracie family.

Has the Instructor competed in BJJ Tournaments?

As in the early days when the Gracies held open challenges, testing you BJJ skills are an essential part of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This allow you to gauge your skill level. This has also helped the sport evolve.

How are the classes conducted?

Unlike traditional martial arts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu depends on another person to be able to learn. Trust is required amongst training partners to keep other safe. You want to choose a school were safety is of utmost importance, and students are respectful of each other.

Because of the level of trust that is required, the trust that is built by training partners creates a bond that allows for mutual respect, and a less formal instruction than traditional martial arts.
